Is Organic Coffee Worth the Price?
There are many questions people have about the products they consume. When it comes to organic products, there are fewer questions about what goes into the product and more questions about whether or not the high price of these products is worth the peace of mind that goes along with organic growing methods.
The thing that must be remembered however is that there are certain qualifications that must be met in order for a product, such as coffee to be certified as organic. Because of the many strict requirements there are few farms that are willing to go through the effort to gain organic certifications or bear the title. This means that as long as the supply is limited for organic coffee and other products and the demand is great, the prices will be high. Most people who are determined that products grown by other means than organic are bad for them are willing to pay the high price of organic coffee.
It is also important to remember that some organic products carry a higher price tag than others. The reason for this is that not all restrictions are created equal. The process for coffee to be certified organic is long and rigorous. Coffee must be grown on land that is free of synthetic pesticides and many other prohibited materials for a period of more than three years. There should also be a qualified buffer between the organic coffee and the closest crop. The farmer growing organic coffee must also have a reasonable and responsible plan of crop rotation that is designed to prevent erosion and mineral depletion while fostering natural pest control methods.
The question remains: is the organic coffee worth the price? In truth, it is to those who feel that it is important to use organic products. Organic coffee is only the tip of the ice burg when you consider the great big world of organic products. People choose to use organic products for many different reasons.
Some people feel that it is environmentally responsible to use organic products. While they may begin their days with organic coffee they feel that this is only one step in a long line of steps that must be taken in order to secure our environment and our planet for future generations. By using organic products many of these people feel they are giving back to the planet. These people are more likely to recycle and use other organic products in addition to being serious conservationists.
Others choose organic products simply because they feel they are making the best possible decisions for their personal health and the health of their children. These people are more likely to use organic consumable and cleaning products as close to exclusively as possible. You aren't likely to find many non-organic products on their shelves or in their homes. While theirs isn't necessarily a compulsion to save the planet it is often a compulsion to do the responsible thing for those they love most.
In other words, the high price of organic coffee while more than well worth it for some is not worth it for all. If you do not honestly feel that organic coffee is truly the best coffee for your health or the health of the planet it isn't likely that you will feel the sense of pride and appreciation that go hand and hand with consuming organic products. On the other hand, for those who truly believe in the value of 'going organic' there really isn't a price that is too high.
